About PIONEER CEMETERY, French Village, Halifax Co., N.S.
The Pioneer Cemetery is a heritage asset of early European settlement found on St. Margaret's Bay,
The Cemetery is located at #11865 Peggy's Cove Rd., French Village, Halifax County. It lies approximately half a kilometre North of St. Paul's Anglican Church (a N.S. Heritage Site) and fronts on the Peggy's Cove Road. It is otherwise bounded by private property, an open field to the North East, a wooded area at the back, and an abandoned community general store to the South West (of interest to Bay residents in itself, as one of the very few murders committed in the area happened here).
The cemetery was established in 1794 and is the earliest documented burial ground on St.Margaret's Bay. The majority of the Bay's residents in those days were "Foreign Protestants" from the Lunenburg area, invited by Governor John Parr in the early 1780s to take up lands not developed or settled by the original grantees. Although used by St. Paul's Church (French Village) until about 1849 when its own burial ground was established, the cemetery was never deeded to St. Paul's and was nondenominational, used by people as far away as Dover and the north and western shores of the Bay.
The cemetery property was purchased for 6£ by local residents from James Boutilier, yeoman, and his wife Susanne Elizabeth Marriott. The land was conveyed to: John ANDREWS; David Jr., Jacques, James, James Frederick, John, John James, Frederick and George BOUTILIER; Christopher, George, John Christopher, and Joseph DAUPHINEE; Adam FREDERICK; James and George JOLLIMORE; Robert KEDDY; Henry LEWIS; John Peter MARRIOTT; and George MASON.
Most of the grave markers are ordinary fieldstones, many are missing, and there are very few headstones. Burials are believed to have filled the site and may even have exceeded its boundaries. There are no records prior to 1834. By examining wills, probate papers, inventories of estates and by considering who purchased the property, as list of names has been compiled of those probably interred pre 1834. After 1834, St. Paul's Parish Records were used.
St. James' Church, Boutilier's Point (first known as the North Shore Chapel) was not erected until July of 1846 on land purchased from John Martin and Mary Catherine Boutilier the 4th of June 1845. On November 15, 1846 the first service was performed (exterior only having been completed) by Rev. John Stannage. The Church was consecrated in January of 1848. The Pioneer Cemetery was used until this time for burials of people living on the North Shore.
The burial ground located at St. Peter's Anglican at Hackett's Cove was purhased in 1810. People from that area were not included in the Pioneer Cemetery burials.
There are also people listed on this site who are not buried at the Pioneer Cemetery but are here because of a connection to someone who is. I have added some geneaology to the site as well. I have tried to be as acurate as possible but errors are possible.
A great number of people helped with the geneaology on this site. Thanks Brenda, Elizabeth, Gwen, Joe, Bob, George and anyone else who has helped.
BURIALS AT THE PIONEER CEMETERY from church records, Dr. Marble's book "DEATHS, BURIALS, AND PROBATE OF NOVA SCOTIANS, 1800-1850, FROM PRIMARY SOURCES" and family members of those interred.
